Aerosmith marks over 50+ years of debut LP with expansive ‘Legendary Edition’ reissue

American rock band Aerosmith performs at Olimpiysky on May 24^ 2014 in Moscow MOSCOW^ RUSSIA - MAY 24^ 2014

Aerosmith is revisiting its breakthrough beginnings with a newly expanded ‘Legendary Edition’ of its 1973 self-titled debut, arriving March 20 in a wide range of formats. Originally peaking at No. 21 in 1973 and later earning double-platinum status, the album launched a career that would define hard rock for decades.

The reissue centers on freshly completed 2024 updates of the original album, including a remaster and a brand-new remix overseen by band co-founders Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Working alongside producer and mixer Zakk Cervini, the pair aimed to present what’s described as their “unfiltered vision” of the record. Available configurations include a 3-CD set, single CD, digital edition, 1-LP black vinyl, 1-LP color vinyl, a 4-LP slipcase, and a deluxe 5-LP box set. The three-disc version pairs the remaster and remix with a full disc of rare material, while vinyl collectors get an even deeper dive.

A major highlight is a vintage concert recording from March 20, 1972, captured at Paul’s Mall in Boston. The 11-song performance features early live renditions of “Make It” and “Mama Kin,” along with covers that became staples of the band’s shows, including “Mother Popcorn” and “Train Kept A Rollin’.” (notably absent from the set is “Dream On,” the group’s debut single). Rounding out the bonus material are six tracks drawn from late-1972 studio sessions that shaped the original album. These include alternate and rehearsal takes of “Make It” and “Write Me a Letter,” plus two in-studio jams: “Harmonica Bass Jam Jelly (Session Take)” and “Joined at the Hip (Aerojam),” the latter incorporating a snippet of “Sweet Emotion.”

The 5-LP box set adds an exclusive clear UV cloud-effect 12-inch featuring both 2024 versions of “Dream On.” It also includes a 3D pop-up diorama, a hardcover book filled with rare photos, new liner notes by Rick Florino, interviews with the original five members, and tributes from artists such as Dolly Parton, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, Slash of Guns N’ Roses, and Sully Erna of Godsmack. A fold-out poster and sticker sheet complete the package.
