Acoustic Storm

Statement from PD Larry Mac:

I am sad to announce that the Host of our Sunday Classic Rock Acoustic Showcase Acoustic Storm has passed away. The host of the show was more than just another radio personality of a syndicated show we ran. Jeff Parets was a colleague, a mentor, and a friend. My first radio internship was at KNIX in Phoenix. My second internship was at his station, The Storm (KSTM), in 1985. Because Jeff gave me that internship, I had the opportunity to make many professional and personal lifelong friendships in and out of radio. The connections I made there, gave me my radio career, which led me to KSLX, KUPD, and eventually here at 96.1 KLPX.

Jeff and I would run into each other and talk over the years. I knew he had had started The Acoustic Storm on KSLX in Phoenix. I heard the show and loved it. The first chance I had, I put the show on Sunday Mornings on KLPX. Wasn’t sure how it would do on a harder leaning Classic Rocker, but it did fantastic. Jeff and I would chat every few weeks about the show and other stuff. Jeff did something that no other syndicated show I have run ever did. He localized the show for Tucson (as I am sure he did in Phoenix). He made it seem as if it was from here. I loved it!

A few weeks ago, I had a feeling something was not right with Jeff. He called me after an email, and told me news I was NOT expecting from him. BUT he seemed upbeat and positive. It gave me hope. He was an extremely private man, and I won’t go into details here. In the last couple of weeks, his wife Audrey kept in touch with me, and there was always hope in her voice. That all changed on Monday night, when I got a text from her. She asked if I wanted to say Goodbye. I called, I spoke to Jeff. I thanked him for being a colleague, a mentor, and most importantly a friend.

We would often joke around that it was cool that the kid he gave an internship to in 1985, ran his syndicated specialty show years later. I know I am rambling, as this is very sad for me. My deepest condolences to his wife, his brother, his other family and friends. He was/is a Phoenix Radio legend. I know for a fact that Jeff’s wish is that the Acoustic Storm goes on. With over 20 years of shows, it will. For the rest of the year, we will run repeats of The Acoustic Storm every Sunday Morning. A new host will take over at the beginning of the year. The host was handpicked by Jeff, and I cannot think of anybody better. I will wait to announce that when they are ready to do so. This is already long and rambling, as I have so many memories.

Rest in Peace my friend.
